sarms vs prohormones

Are you wondering how SARMs compare to prohormones? Both of these substances are very popular in the bodybuilding world for increasing muscle mass. We’ll take a look at both of these powerful anabolic compounds and note the pros and cons of each.

What are SARMs?

SARMs are selective androgen receptor modulators. They are non-hormonal drugs that target specific androgen receptors to increase muscle growth. SARMs were originally designed to treat diseases like muscle wasting disease and osteoporosis. SARMs have become very popular in recent years due to their ability to produce large amounts of muscle growth in a relatively short period of time. Learn more about SARMs here.

SARMs have many positive effects like increasing muscle mass, strength, and endurance. They can increase the rate of recovery from muscle breakdown. SARMs increase protein synthesis to help build more muscle from the protein you eat. They also increase bone density and strength along with enhancing sex drive and sexual stamina.

What Are the Side Effects of SARMs?

SARMs do have some side effects. These side effects are generally mild and can be resolved by stopping the usage of the drug. However, some side effects like suppression of natural hormone production may require Post Cycle Therapy (PCT) for SARMs.

There are several different types of SARMs that may produce different side effects. Some of the more common side effects include visual disturbances, suppression of natural hormones, hair loss, gynecomastia, liver damage, and erectile dysfunction.

Are SARMs Legal?

We go into this deeper in our article about are SARMs legal, but the common consensus seems to be that SARMs are legal to purchase and possess for research purposes in most countries. However, actually ingesting these drugs outside of a clinical or laboratory environment may actually be illegal. Some countries, like the United States, are starting to crack down on the sale and distribution of SARMs. Australia now regulates SARMs in the same category as anabolic steroids. SARMs are banned from most drug tested sporting events.

What are Prohormones?

Prohormones are precursors to hormones. The compound itself is not an active steroid, but the body can convert this compound into an anabolic hormone. Since these drugs are essentially anabolic steroids. They produce rapid muscle growth, strength gains, and fat burning.

Prohormones have been popular for a bit longer than SARMs. Prohormones are androgenic, meaning they increase male-like features in users. They can also convert partially into the female hormone estrogen. In some cases, oral active steroids have been sold as prohormones.

Prohormones have several beneficial effects. The main effect is increased muscle growth. Major strength increases are also reported by users. Prohormones can also increase fat burning, improve sexual performance, and enhance the mood.

What are the Side Effects of Prohormones?

Prohormones do have some side effects to be aware of. The biggest concern is the shutdown of natural testosterone production that requires PCT similar to the SARM PCT we recommend. Some side effects can go away but many of the side effects of prohormone usage can be permanent.

Some common prohormone side effects include increased aggressive behavior, hair loss, breast enlargement or gynecomastia, shrunken testicles, and reduced sperm production. Prohormones, like their counterpart anabolic steroids, can also cause acne, increases in blood pressure, and cholesterol problems. Since most prohormones are taken orally and they require the liver to process the compound into the active ingredient they are hard on the liver and can cause liver damage. Since prohormones increase the growth of all muscle tissue, they can cause increased size in organs like the heart.

Are Prohormones Legal?

Though they are technically controlled under the Anabolic Steroid Control Act of 1990, prohormones have only been illegal in the United States since about 2004. Many manufacturers were including prohormone ingredients in their supplements but labeling them as other ingredients. Many users were unaware that they were essentially taking anabolic steroids. It should be noted that DHEA, a prohormone, is still legal. Prohormones are banned from most drug tested sporting events.

SARMs vs Prohormones

As we established above, both drugs can greatly increase muscle mass, strength, endurance, and athletic ability. However, they act in different ways. SARMs are selective in the tissue that they target, so they don’t have the unwanted side effect of growth in other areas like organs. Some SARMs and all Prohormones have been shown to shut down the natural production of testosterone requiring PCT.

SARMs and Prohormones both have side effects that should be considered before trying either class of drug. These include increased breast tissue growth, hair loss, mood issues, and more. It’s up to you to weigh the benefits versus the potential side effects and watch for any potential side effects that might occur.

The legality of both substances is something to worry about. While prohormones are banned they can still be found on the market. SARMs are legal for research purposes but there are SARMs for sale online. However, it is probably illegal to ingest either of these drugs for recreational purposes.

Alternatives to SARMs or Prohormones

There are legal alternative supplements that you can use in place of SARMs or prohormones. These supplements won’t produce as drastic of an effect in muscle growth as SARMs or prohormones but they also come with fewer side effects.
